Full Description: Magnificent private reserve on the banks of the Luangwa River! This exclusive private game reserve, which is a huge 18 000 ha in extent, is situated in South Luangwa, Zambia. It is part of a conservancy of 10 of the largest private properties in Southern Africa. Zambia is located in the heart of Africa, and is approximately the size of France and Germany combined. It is a well-watered, generally forested and hilly country, and its economy is based on mining, agriculture and tourism. This magnificent game reserve is situated 320 km east of the capital of Lusaka, along the banks of the great Luangwa River, and close to the South Luangwa National Park. The Laungwa Valley is situated at the extremity of the famous African Rift Valley in an area with rich diversity of landscape and variety of wild life. Description: The diverse landscape in this area is really exceptional, consisting of hills and plains, savannah and wooded areas, and rivers and flood plains. Two rivers form natural boundaries of the property- the Luangwa and Nyimba. Elephants, lions, leopards, crocodiles, roan antelope, sable antelope and Lichtenstein hartebeest are predominant species in the area. The Luangwa Valley also has an important population of hippopotamus, crocodiles and more than 100 fish species. It is also a bird watchers paradise, with 134 species identified, including francolin, fish eagles, Egyptian geese and carmine bee eaters. Lodge facilities: The lodge has been built along the Luangwa River with magnificent views of the game drinking from the water in front of the lodge. The lodge has 5-star facilities, and has been built with natural and and local material, including stone walls and thatched roofs. The lodge is made up of 4 individual villas. The surrounding indigenous bush has been maintained to attract animals and birds, while still offering excellent views of the river and flood plains. Each of the villas is 70 sqm, and includes a lounge, bedroom, dressing area, a bathroom (with bath and shower) and a toilet area. Additional buildings provide lodge support- a large well-equipped kitchen, a laundry, a store room, an office and a garage for 4 cars. A new lodge is being built, and should be ready in July 2009. Situated approximately 200 m from the lodge is staff quarters, a generator, garages and all maintenance equipment and machines. 3 manned observation camps are situated at each corner of the property, and the property is fenced for approximately 30 km, with the unfenced parts being along the rivers which define its other boundaries. The property has a private airstrip. Wild game: The game on the reserve is extremely varied, and most species, except elephant and wild dogs, have been bought through the Zambian State, and are now the exclusive property of the reserve. Elephant are common, but migratory- sometimes, more than 100 elephant gather inside the property. Buffalo gather together on the reserve to form herds. Lion and leopard are also common. Other game include wild dogs, roan antelope, sable antelope, eland, warthog, zebra, kudu, waterbuck, hartebeest, crocodile, caracal, hyena and many more. The owners of the property have a 99-year lease on the land, signed by the government in the name of the President of Zambia- there are 92 years left to run on the lease. It is important to note that this is an irrevocable lease. Most properties in Zambia have either a 14-year lease (with uncertain renewal) or a commercial concession.
